A Psychology Degree vs. Becoming a Psychologist

Why holding a psychology degree rarely means you can practice as a psychologist.

A degree is not a license

A bachelor's or master's degree in psychology is an academic qualification. In most countries, using the title psychologist or practicing independently is regulated and requires specific accredited training, supervised experience and registration or licensure.

Four kinds of programs

General psychology education gives a broad foundation. Research-oriented programs train you to conduct research and often lead to a PhD. Professional training programs in clinical, counseling or school psychology include supervised practice. Many academic programs, including most forensic, sport or organizational degrees, do not themselves lead to professional registration.

Jurisdiction matters

Accreditation and eligibility do not transfer automatically between countries or between US states. Always check the regulator for the place where you intend to work, using the exact program and campus you are considering.
